LAMMERSIDE CASTLE
Westmorland
As the River Eden passes south of Appleby it enters into a beautiful rugged landscape of moorland, one of England's unvisited glories.
Lammerside Castle stands at the head of the Vale of Mallerstang, which passes down into Yorkshire. It is the shattered remains of a pele tower built by either the Warcops or the Whartons in the 1300s. Little is known of its history, but like most pele's in the area it was probably attacked by the Scots during that very violent century.
It stands ruined today on private land, although it is readily accessible in this remote but beautiful place.
