KINNERSLEY CASTLE

Herefordshire

Kinnersley Castle, Herefordshire

The original Kinnersley Castle existed here by 1340 when it was passed onto Richard de la Bere from the Kinnersley family.  Little other history of known of the site and whether the Castle was ever built in stone is unclear - although medieval masonry is believed to exist in the staircase tower of the building which stands on the site today, so possibly a stone Castle of some kind did exist here.

The impressive Jacobean house which is called Kinnersley Castle today was built between 1585 and 1590 for Roger Vaughan.  Although no longer a Castle in any visible way, this is a very attractive and unusual building and is well worth a visit if you can catch one of its rare summertime open days.
