Hoghton Tower, Lancashire

Hoghton Tower, a very non-descriptive word for a quite large mansion, is really a manor house built in Elizabethan times for the Hoghton family.

It was fortified during the Civil War, a very late example of serious stone fortification.  The gatehouse was used as a powder store and 200 men were killed when it exploded.

After the Civil War the house was abandoned and was a ruin for many centuries, until it was purchased early in the 20th and restored into the manor house we see today.

The Castle is open to the public on certain dates during the summer.
