HEYWOOD CASTLE

It seems incredible that this remote corner of Devon should somehow justify the presence of two Castles.  But there are indeed two motte Castles at Heywood.  One with a bailey (pictured above) which is well preserved and in a nice clearing in the Forestry Commission's land; the other without a bailey and overgrown and obscured by the same Forestry Commission's trees.

On our approach to Heywood Castle we had no idea that we would be presented with a motte of the size and condition as the one we found, and it was quite a pleasant surprise.

History for either of the Castles seems a little harder to come by, or indeed a reason for their position which is not particularly strategic.

Both Castles are on Forestry Commission land, one easy to find being in a clearing next to the main pathway - the other hidden and obscured by trees about three quarters of a mile away.
