HERTFORD CASTLE

Hertfordshire

Hertford Castle, Hertfordshire

Although the Gatehouse has been seriously restructured (in the 1790s), Hertford Castle was constructed by the Conqueror, and some of its ancient stone walling remains, including one octagonal tower - most likely built during the 1200s.

The Castle fell quickly to a siege during the 1216 rebellion against King John, and it was here that King Richard II learnt of his deposition from the Throne before being moved to Pontefract Castle in Yorkshire where he met his end.

The Gatehouse was rebuilt in brick in the 1460s, but was seriously and rather clumsily altered by the Earl of Hillsborough in the 1790s.

The bailey and grounds are open at all times, with the Gatehouse opening on occasional days.
