HEMYOCK CASTLE

Hemyock Castle, Devon

Probably Devon's most obscure stone Castle - owing partly to only be open to the public on Bank Holiday Mondays - this quite ruined Castle stands remote from most of Devon's important Castles (which crowd around the vulnerable south coast).

It was built by the belligerent Sir William Asthorpe after 1380, when licence to crenellate was granted.  However, both before and after the construction the Castle was owned by the Dynham family.  It was a quadrangular Castle with no less than seven round flanking towers, one of which remains in good enough condition to climb.  The Gatehouse is also quite well preserved (see above).

The rest of the Castle was probably destroyed during the Royalist attack in 1643.
