HALTON CASTLE

Lancashire

Halton Castle, Lancashire

This very handsome and very typical motte and bailey occupies a very commanding position over the Lune Valley north of Lancaster.

The Castle's history is fairly obscure, but it was most likely built around 1100 like most of its kind. No stonework ever seems to have been added and it was probably abandoned from quite an early date.

The Castle stands on public ground.
