GOLTHO CASTLE

Lincolnshire

Goltho Castle, Lincolnshire

Goltho Castle was the site of one of the most important archaeological digs on a Castle site. It uncovered many of the now accepted theories about wooden Castles.  Unfortunately, it did little to ellucidate the history of this quite extensive site.  The "platform motte" style tends to imply an Anarchy period; although the Anarchy wasn't particularly active in Lincolnshire.

Unfortunately since the excavations the Castle site has been left to dereliction and today it seems to exist mostly as a dump for household waste - which is a terrible shame.
