FOLKESTONE CASTLE
Kent
The incredible position of these earthworks has only been enhanced by the massive Channel Tunnel terminus at the foot of the hill. How many travelling on the Eurostar, or on the M20, have noticed the odd, knobbly shape of the hill they pass below?
This is Folkestone Castle. An second, stone, Castle was built near the harbour - but this has long since departed into the Channel, leaving us with this Castle and it's commanding view of the town. Folkestone Castle is also known as 'Caesar's Camp', although it has nothing to do with Romans. An original Iron Age Hill Fort was adapted into a Norman motte Castle at some stage soon after the Conquest. Excavations show some traces of stonework, but otherwise the Castle's history is shady and unspectacular.
What is spectacular, perhaps even breathtaking, is to stand on the ramparts and take in the views below you. The Castle is open and accessible at all times.
