FILLONGLEY CASTLES
Warwickshire
Fillongley is one of those tiny English villages that for some obscure reason possesses two Castles! (Although only Dartmouth in Devon and Hamsted Marshall in Berkshire seem to have three).
In the case of Fillongley it would appear one predated the other. Nearby the Castle pictured above is a motte Castle, known as "Old Fillongley" and probably abandoned in Henry III's time. It is possible the second Castle was started during the Anarchy, but it wasn't fortified in stone until after the abandonment of the older site. The architects being the Hastings family. A licence to crenellate was granted in 1283 and a Barony granted to Sir John Hastings in 1301. The last of the Hastings line died in 1389 and the Castle passed eventually to the Nevilles of Warwick who left Fillongley to fall into decay.
The Castle stands on public land.
