DILHAM CASTLE
Norfolk
It seems to be almost impossible to dig up history on this tiny fragment of castle hidden deep in the Norfolk Broads. Castle books seem to ignore it and even Sir Nikolas Pevsner reserves it a place as a note under Dilham Hall near which it stands. It seems likely to date from the 15th Century and was most likely built by Sir Henry Inglose. The remaining sections have a very Tudor look to them and it is not impossible that the castle was rebuilt or extended at this period.
Today only one corner tower and some wall remains and these were restored at the end of the 19th Century. Close study of the walls shows some flint building underneath the brickwork, so it is possible that an even earlier structure may have been built here before the 15th Century building.
The castle stands on private land, but access can be had if asked for in advance.
