Danby Castle, North Riding of Yorkshire

This small ruined Castle is most remarkable for its setting in the heart of the wonderful North York Moors.  The Castle itself is almost indistinguishable from the farmhouse which has grown up around it; but recently English Heritage have started to assist with cleaning the Castle up and it is open to the public occasionally at present.

It dates back to the late 14th century and was built either by the Latimer family or, perhaps more likely, by the ubiquitous Nevilles who purchased the land in 1380. It was always a fairly minor Castle by Neville standards and its history is unspectacular, having been passed to a very minor branch of the family.

Nevertheless, a good deal of the Castle's structure remains, and it will be interesting to see what results from the rennovation currently being undertaken.
