COWTON CASTLE

North Riding of Yorkshire

Cowton Castle, North Riding of Yorkshire

This is either a large pele tower or a small keep - it is somewhere in the blurred join between the two.  It is more tower than keep because it dates only to the late 15th century, by which time "keep" Castles were becoming out of date.  The building was Sir Richard Conyers, who also built South Cowton Church.

The Castle is in immaculate condition, aside from a couple of more modern windows in the "house" part of the Castle.  It is occupied as a farmhouse but is visible from the outside.
