COPE'S CASTLE

Cope's Castle, Middlesex

The first building which forms one wing of the current building was constructed by Sir Walter Cope, a favourite of James I around 1604. Cope dubbed the building "Cope’s Castle" and the name stuck until 1661 when under the ownership of Charles James Fox it became known as Holland House. In the 19th Century Lady Holland had a ‘salon’ here which was attended by such luminaries as Sheridan, Walter Scott, Byron, Wordsworth and Dickens!

The castle passed to the aptly named Sir Henry Rich who became Earl of Holland, Lincolnshire and the whole was sold to London County Council in 1952. Today the building is a Youth Hostel and open air theatre takes place in its courtyard.
