CLEARWELL CASTLE

Clearwell Castle, Gloucestershire

This handsome building today operates as an hotel.  Despite its position slap-bang on the Welsh Border it is not a genuine Castle, nor is there any record of a real Castle having been here.

Until 1908 it was known as Clearwell Court. The first building was constructed by the Throckmorton family early in the 1600s, but this building was built by Thomas Wyndham around 1740, possibly even earlier - making it one of the earlier examples of "mock gothick".

It stands on the edge of the Royal Forest of Dean and makes an excellent, if slightly pricey, base for exploring this beautiful region.  In 1929 there was a disastrous fire and during World War II the roof and floors were removed for no readily apparent reason.

Thankfully it has been sympathetically and completely restored.
