The Citadel, Herefordshire

This hugely impressive Iron Age Hill Fort, modified into a motte, stands high in the Malvern Hills with wonderful, breathtaking views in all directions.

The Hill Fort itself, also known as the Herefordshire Beacon (the Worcestershire Beacon sits at the other end of the Hills), is impressive enough with complex multi-level ditches.  It is crowned by a large motte of uncertain origin.  It must have been one hell of a place to be garrisoned, as bad weather must be very bad indeed in this exposed place!

The Malverns - inspiration for Sir Edward Elgar - are one of the neatest of all English hills, running in a long spine between Herefordshire and Worcestershire.  Without a doubt The Citadel is one of the best places from which to see them.

Like all the Malvern range, The Citadel is on public land, although it is quite a strenuous walk from the car park!
