CHARTLEY CASTLE

Chartley Castle, Staffordshire

Also known as Chartley Holme Castle, the building stands midway between Stafford and Tutbury Castles and is similar to both. The earthworks which still are impressive were built by the Earls of Chester during the early Norman period.  Around 1220 Earl Ranulf built the stone Castle with a round keep on the motte and a strong, typical, round-towered gatehouse of the Edwardian period.

The Castle passed to the Earls of Derby and then to Henry III, but it seems to have fallen into disuse at a quite early period and was finally abandoned completely in Tudor times when a new Hall was built nearby.

The Castle used to be on public land, but it seems to be inaccessible now, although a view can be had from the A518.
