Cawood Castle, West Riding of Yorkshire

Not a great deal is left of the Castle built by the Bishops of York here considering it was once dubbed "The Windsor of the North".  It was a large quadrangular Castle built in the 14th century; the Gatehouse that is the most castle-like survivor today was added by Bishop John Kempe in the 1440s.  Underneath the brickwork on the range of rooms is more of Bishop Kempe's Castle.

It was unlikely that the Castle was ever seriously considered as a fortification, but despite this it was besieged in the Civil War and most of it was pulled down by the Roundheads after they captured it in 1644.

What remains today is owned by the Landmark Trust and rented out as a luxury holiday home.
