CASTLE RING

Staffordshire

Castle Ring, Staffordshire

Standing on the edge of Cannock Chase, this Iron Age Hill Fort occupies a deceptively high point in the surrounding countryside.  Where the tree cover breaks sudden long views open up in front of the visitor.

The Hill Fort is quite large, with a fairly simple double ring and an equally straight-forward gate area.  Excavations have revealed the usual shards of pottery and proof of general occupation, but nothing to suggest anything ever occurred here in the way of fighting.

The Castle is on public land, and is one of the most easily accessed of all Iron Age Hill Forts, the car park being only a very short walk away.
