CALDWELL CASTLE

Worcestershire

Sometimes called 'Caldwall', this octagonal tower stands by the River Stour just outside the centre of Kidderminster.

It seems likely to have been built around 1347 by the Cooksey family as one of of a hall block. A second wing was added later but over the years all has vanished saving this one tower which has the appearance of a corner tower of a courtyard castle. In the 15th Century the castle passed to Roger Winter and in 1589 it was sold to Francis Clare. In 1897 it was acquired by Kidderminster borough council. Subsequently it was used as a cookery school, but is once again a private residence.

It is easily seen from private land and stands at one end of 'Castle Street' near the Fire Station.
