BYTON CASTLE

Herefordshire

Byton Castle, Herefordshire

This large and elaborate earthwork stands in the church yard, and is mostly made up of a natural hill (upon which the church also stands) which has been landscaped for defensive use.

It probably dates from the 1100s when the Welsh Marches were at their most wild and violent.

Little historical record exists of the Castle, and it is included here as much as anything for the dramatic photograph!
