BURTON-IN-LONSDALE CASTLE

Burton-in-Lonsdale Castle, West Riding of Yorkshire

This fairly sizable motte is first mentioned in 1129, but it almost certain predates that by a few decades.  At the time of Domesday (1086) the property here was Royal, so the Castle may even date from that period.  The motte has two baileys (a common William I trait).

Nothing much seems to have occurred here, but in 1322 the Castle was confiscated from the Mowbray family who had held it briefly in opposition to Edward II.  The Castle's history from there on in is unclear, although it never seems to have possessed stonework.

The Castle is on private land, but is very clearly visible from the road.
