BROUGHTON CASTLE

Oxfordshire

Broughton Castle, Oxfordshire

This Castle is almost only a manor house - a licence to crenellate was given in 1405 and there are some rather ineffectual curtain walls constructed here and there.  A wet moat was the only real concession to true defensiveness.

The Castle dates to around the early 1300s, although most of what remains is almost certainly a century or two later than that.  The whole building, save one small wing, was heavily remodelled in the 1550s by Lord and Lady Saye.

Broughton Castle is open during the summer months.
