BRONCROFT CASTLE

Shropshire

This rather handsome private house is centred around the Tower House of a Castle constructed around 1377-99 by Sir Roger Burley.  The Castle passed through a series of owners until it was acquired by the Talbot Earls of Shrewsbury around 1540 when it was described as "a very goodly place like a Castle" at which time it had almost certainly progressed beyond "Tower House" to a full blown fortified manor house.

It was held by the Royalists in 1642, but by 1645 it was being held instead by Parliament and after the Civil War concluded it was ordered to be slighted.  It was still occupied after the slighting and around 1663-1685 it was restored.  In 1889 the Castle came into the possession of Jmes Whitaker who had the Castle rebuilt extensively, although very thoughfully did little to the Tower House which is the oldest surviving and best preserved part of the medieval building.

The Castle is a private residence but is easily visible from the road.
