BLAISE CASTLE

Gloucestershire

Blaise Castle, Gloucestershire

This lovely belvedere Castle was built in 1766 for Thomas Farr and cost an incredible £3,000 (a fortune in those days).  It has an unusual plan, being basically made up of four circular towers, formed into a triangular arrangement.  Sadly the door has now been bricked up - albeit with matching stone - and access to the parapet is no longer allowed.

The Castle stands in the grounds of Blaise House which operates as a local museum during the summer months.  The whole area of Blaise - the Castle, the House and the famed nearby Blaise Hamlet - seems oddly out of place amidst the run-down industry of northern Bristol.
