BETCHWORTH CASTLE

Surrey

Betchworth Castle, Surrey

Betchworth Castle was originally constructed by Richard FitzGilbert, but of this Castle nothing substantial remains - perhaps only the site, on a hill high above the River Mole.  The Castle passed to Sir Thomas Browne who received a licence to crenellate in 1449.  The Brownes lived here until about 1690.  The next owner, William Fenwick, demolished much of it and turned the bit that remained into a normal house.  It is the ruins of this hybrid that remain today.

The Castle stands in the midst of a golf course and access is with permission only.
