BARBURY CASTLE
Wiltshire
Barbury is one of the best preserved Iron Age Hill Forts in Wiltshire - a county famed for its ancient sites. It stands above the Ridgeway ancient track and is one of the very few Hill Forts in the country with its own shop! (Well, at least when we visited back in 1996)
The Fort is made up of two oval ditches with an elaborate entrance way to the west. Extensive excavations in the central area have revealed the positions of huts and storage pits. Like all Iron Age Hill Forts it was constructed in the centuries before the Romans arrived, and may have remained in occupation until well into the Saxon period.
The Castle is easily reached and well signed posted and is a good example of a Hill Fort to take people to who are a little less mobile.
