ALMONDBURY CASTLE

West Riding of Yorkshire

Almondbury Castle, West Riding of Yorkshire

Almondbury Hill, south of Huddersfield, can be seen from many miles in most directions.  This is mainly due to the magnificent Victorian Folly Tower which stands at its peak.  The Tower can be climbed at certain times during the year.

The hill is surrounded by a large Iron Age Hill Fort (rampart pictured above) in a roughly almond shape (possibly where the hill gets its name).  This was converted into a motte and bailey Castle by Henry de Lacy during the Anarchy.  The Castle survived Henry II's accession to the throne but was dismantled during the reign of Henry III and little or nothing of it remains today.

As well as the Tower the ramparts of the Iron Age Hill Fort contain a pub - our kind of Castle!!
