ABINGER CASTLE

Surrey

Abinger Castle, Surrey

Abinger Castle (apart from often coming first alphabetically in lists of Castles) is chiefly important for the excavations that took place from 1947-49 which revealed the post holes and footings of the Norman wood keep and walls.  These excavations increased our knowledge of wooden Castles by a large amount.

The Castle itself is certainly early, possibly a Royal Castle built by William I or II.  It appears to have been abandoned at an early stage, and certainly no stonework was ever present.

Abinger Castle stands in a private garden, but the owner is kind enough not only to cut down his hedge (which runs alongside a public footpath) opposite the Castle, but also to floodlight it during the night!
