CASTLE ACRE PRIORY
Norfolk
Cluniac Monks
A tremendously picturesque ruin, Castle Acre Priory was founded by Cluniac Order in 1089 by William de Warenne, Earl of Surrey. The Cluniac Order were considered "alien" by the authorities and were heavily taxed during the Wars against France. Nevertheless Castle Acre Priory flourished enough for the Prior to build himself a large and expensive private residence around 1500. Unfortunate for him that there were only going to be about 40 years to enjoy it before the Dissolution arrived and Castle Acre began it's journey towards the ruin we see today.
English Heritage own the Priory, as well as the nearby Castle Acre Castle.
