WYBERT'S CASTLE

Lincolnshire

Wybert's Castle, Lincolnshire

In the heart of the Fens, a land of eerie flat reclaimed marshland, Wybert's Castle is a typical example of a Fenland moated site.  There are a number of these sites spread across southern Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire.  They are generally square or oblong and not of any great height, but almost always with a wet moat...the water table never being very far under the surface in this landscape.

There is some debate as to the age of these moated sites...some say they are prehistoric, others that they date from early Norman times or the Anarchy.  Little excavation has been undertaken, but the site at Wrangle, north east of here, yielded evidence of medieval construction, making the early Norman/Anarchy period seem the likeliest.

Wybert's Castle stands near Wyberton and is visible from one of the typical straight featureless Fenland roads which traverse this oddest of British landscapes.
