WITHERNSEA CASTLE

East Riding of Yorkshire

Withernsea Castle, East Riding of Yorkshire

The town of Withernsea, it would be fair to say, is very remote ... in fact we saw T-shirts for sale with the slogan "Where the f**k's Withernsea?"  The East Riding of Yorkshire is a remote sort of a place in general, so by the time you get down this end of the flat and marshy wilderness you feel a very very long way from civilisation.

Withernsea Castle is, of course, nothing of the sort.  In fact it is the former entrance to the Pier which once jutted out into the North Sea here.  A date for construction of the gateway seems to be 1875, which sounds about right.

The town is surprisingly pleasant, even on a cold foggy day like the day of our visit, and a big Yorkshire chip butty probably helped the experience seem a little better still.
