WEOBLEY CASTLE

Glamorganshire

Weobley Castle, Glamorganshire

This small fortified manor house stands on the north coast of the Gwyr (Gower) peninsula. The Castle dates back to around 1300 when the land was owned by the de la Bere family. It passed to Sir Rhys ap Thomas and later to the Mansel family.

In 1409 during the rising of Owain Glyndwr the Castle was badly damaged; the only action it ever seems to have seen.  It was still occupied during Henry VIII's reign as it was lived in by Lady Catherine Edgecumbe.  It would appear that not long after that time it ceased to be used and became one of the many Castles which was turned into a barn.

The Castle is owned by CADW (Welsh Heritage) and is open at any reasonable time.
