ST. CATHERINE'S CASTLE

Cornwall

St. Catherine's Castle, Cornwall

A tiny curiosity, this is one of Henry VIII's forts built in the 1540s.  It is really little more than a place to mount guns...as if Fowey (pron. 'foy'), above whose river mouth the Castle stands, didn't have enough with the other three blockhouses protecting it!

There are virtually no records relating to this Castle.  No records of its construction, none of its garrison, and certainly none of any action occuring here.

The Castle is owned by English Heritage today, and has survived the other three Fowey blockhouses in much better condition.  It is freely accessible at any time.  If nothing else it is worth trekking up to the Castle for the superb views back up the Fowey River.
