SHAM CASTLE

Wimpole Hall, Cambridgeshire

Sham Castle, Wimpole Hall, Cambridgeshire

Lord Chancellor Hardwicke bought the vast estate at Wimpole Hall in 1740 and had seen Sanderson Miller's large sham Castle at Hagley Hall in Worcestershire.  So he contacted the architect to construct a similar building at Wimpole.

It wasn't completely until 1772 by which time Lord Hardwicke had died and his son had taken the title, the property and thus inherited one of England's premier folly ruins.

The Hall is owned by the National Trust.  You can walk up to the Sham Castle, although it is quite a trek from the Hall.
