PENGERSYCK CASTLE

Cornwall

Pengersyck Castle, Cornwall

This stubby little tower is another of those peculiarly Cornish curiosities.  It has all the appearances of an early fortified tower, or a 14th century pele tower.  It is in fact a Tudor construction.  It shows that the far west of Cornwall was pretty lawless even by the time of Henry VIII.

There seems to have been little history attached to this Castle, although it does have an impressive array of ghosts...Henry de Pengersyck, who was excommunicated by the church long before the present Castle was built is one, the 'Wicked Crusader' a second, a man called Milliton yet another who tried to poison his wife's wine, but died when she switched the goblets.  Milliton may have been responsible for building the Castle we see today.  Another ghost is that of a monk who walks from the neighbouring property...then there is Engina de Pengersyck who haunts one of the bedrooms.

In 1997 The Ghost Club Society spent the night in the Castle.  Seven members reported seeing two female figures, others that they 'felt something'.  This little Castle seems to have more than its fair share of spectres!

The Castle is a private residence, but is visible from the road to Praa Sands.
