The Legacy

by Roy Barton

You don't know how I loved you dear
And how I missed you when you weren't here
Oh how I wanted you
You broke my heart in two
You said you loved nobody else
And then you left me on the shelf
You didn't want to know
Bit I didn't want you to go
You went off to play your hide-and-seek
But you knew that I had to peek
And then I saw you with him
And I lost all sense of rhythm
In my soul.

You went off with him that night
I always thought some day you might
You never did return
My heart has always burned
But your happiness didn't last
And fate, it seems, is always cast
For you, unfortunately
He met his legacy
He drove his car off a mountain side
He'd gone out for a pleasure ride
No-one there could save
Him from a watery grave
Now you're alone.

I'm seeing things I cannot see
I'm hearing things that cannot be
I'm talking to things that cannot talk
I'm chasing things that cannot walk
Darling, will you let me
Complete, complete my legacy.

I read a paper I found in the park
Couldn't see it too well because it was dark
But what I saw distressed
And I fought to read the rest
The printing blurred before my face
About a top model who fell from grace
She took an overdose and died
And although I thought you hated me I cried
I had to see you just once more
I climbed up to the thirty-eighth floor
It was a long way up
A short way down, then I hit the ground
And I joined you.

I'm seeing things I cannot see
I'm hearing things that cannot be
I'm talking to things that cannot talk
I'm chasing things that cannot walk
Darling, you have helped me
To complete, complete my legacy.

And now I'm with you eternally
I realise now you wanted me
You couldn't find a way about
So you had to cut his brakes to let him out
Then you too wanted to die
So I would commit suicide
And now as I join with you
We must learn to start our life anew
Love has spanned across the void
And I am now more overjoyed
Than I ever was before
And I want you even more
Than I did then.

I'm seeing things I cannot see
I'm hearing things that cannot be
I'm talking to things that cannot talk
I'm chasing things that cannot walk
Darling, you and I can see
That we've completed, completed our legacy.
