KNEPP CASTLE
Sussex
There are two Knepp Castles - one is a mansion built by John Nash in 1809. The other (pictured above) is the tiny remnant of a keep built, probably, by the de Braose family in the early 1100s. All the that remains is a corner of the keep, crowned with a peculiar "weather vane" type device.
The de Braose family sided against King John in the Magna Carta rebellion and the Castle was ordered destroyed. This may not have occurred as there is some tradition of destruction during the Civil War.
The Castle is on private ground, but a good view can be had from the A24.
