GILLING CASTLE

North Riding of Yorkshire

Gilling Castle, North Riding of Yorkshire

The centre of this mostly 18th Century mansion is a 14th Century towerhouse Castle built by Thomas de Etton.  The whole of the building was given a considerable facelift when the newer wings were added, but the lower part of the original is fairly untouched, whilst only the exteriors of the upper storeys retain any vestige of their medieval appearance.

An earlier rebuild by William Fairfax in Elizabethan times resulted in a solar which is well preserved and occasionally opened to the public during the summer.

The Castle is a school today, but the grounds are open regularly in the summer.
