Gather The Children In

by Roy Barton

The old man lay dying
His breathing was slow
And he called to his wife
Said it was time to go
His dark, watery eyes
Read her mind within
And with a faltering voice
Said "Gather the children in".

Gather the children in
For now is the time
To pass my possessions
To those that are mine.

He reached for his cross
Laying on his table side
He wanted to give prayer
Before the time that he died
And grasping in his hands old and thin
Closed his eyes
Said "Gather the children in".

Gather the children in
For now is the time
To pass my possessions
To those that are mine.

So they all stood by his bed
And he surrendered all he owned
They all gave their thanks
Then he departed his throne
Throughout all their lives
They'd save everything
And when they were dying
Say "Gather the children in".

Gather the children in
For now is the time
To pass my possessions
To those that are mine.
