DUNGUAIRE CASTLE
County Galway
This very handsome and well-preserved Castle stands near the shores of the end of Kinvarra Bay which leads into Galway Bay. The Castle is on the site of an old Celtic Ringfort but wasn't built until the 1500s in the "English" style (i.e. very much in the style of Scottish towerhouses!).
The Castle's site is more spectacular than the building itself which was very heavily restored in the 18th/19th centuries.
The Castle is open throughout the summer months and holds 'medieval' banquets during the high season.
