Cumberland, like Westmorland, has vanished into modern day Cumbria. This is the county of the Lake District, with Windermere, Derwent Water, Wastwater and many others, plus the highest peaks and the town of Keswick, nestling in the very heart of the Lakes.
The north of the county is relatively flatter and is dominated by the Solway Firth which separates England from Scotland. This is the land of the Reivers; bandits and raiders from both sides of the borders and here (and in Northumbria) are many pele towers, defensive homesteads many of which refer to themselves as Castles.
