BENNINGTON CASTLE
Hertfordshire
Bennington Castle is a bit of an oddity...although apparently possessing quite extensive ruins, almost all of the stonework was erected as an impressively accurate folly around 1832. The stump of a stone keep does exist, but the main remnant of the original Castle, built probably during the Anarchy, are the large earthworks upon which the Georgian building of Bennington Lordship was built and the follies added later.
Bennington is today best known for its spectacular display of snowdrops for which the grounds are opened especially in February/March of each year. The grounds are also opened during the summer months.
