AMBERLEY CASTLE

Sussex

Amberley Castle, Sussex

Amberley Castle is built in a dominant position overlooking the River Arun at its furthest navigable point.  It was built in more or less one go around 1377 by William Rede, Bishop of Chichester. Little seems to have happened here, the Bishops of Chichester used it as a residence until the mid 1500s, tradition speaks of a siege during the Civil War which hastened the decay of the Castle.

It was restored in 1908 by the Duke of Norfolk, with great delicacy and skill (unlike nearby Arundel which was turned into a mammoth new mansion!).  Goodly amounts of curtain wall remain and the Gatehouse is very impressive indeed.

Amberley Castle operates as a luxury hotel.
