When the Communist state of Yugoslavia self-destructed so violently in the 1990s only one country escaped from the fighting. This was Slovenia, the far north of the country, a place with much more in common with Austria and its neighbours than the more volatile Balkans to the south.
Slovenia inherited some beautiful Alpine-style scenery, particularly around Lake Bled and has, along with Croatia, become a popular tourist destination in its own right. The capital of this tiny nation is Llubljana. Other highlights being the largest showcaves in Europe at Postojna and the Lipizzaner Stud Farm where the horses for the Spanish Riding School in Vienna are bred.
