The tiny county of Rutland (England's smallest) was until recently swallowed up by neighbouring Leicestershire. Indeed, the 1970's saw Rutland not only disappear into another county, but a fairly large chunk disappeared under water with the construction of Rutland Water - at the time the largest reservoir in Europe.
The county's motto is "Much in Little" and it is quite appropriate for there is much more to Rutland than Rutland Water and closer inspection brings many rewards.
Only one Castle has any substantial remains, that in the county town of Oakham.
