The old county of Oxfordshire only existed north of the River Thames (the rest of modern Oxfordshire was then Berkshire). Most of the county is made up of flat land - the flood plains of the Thames. The City of Oxford is one of the most attractive in England, famed for the oldest University in Great Britain.
Only relatively few Castles of note exist in the county, although Broughton is one of the best in the Home Counties.
