Nottinghamshire is Robin Hood Country.  For many centuries almost the whole of the north of the county (plus parts of Lincolnshire and Yorkshire) was covered by Sherwood Forest, only a few fragments of which now remain.  Forever more Nottinghamshire will be associated with Robin of Loxley (Loxley is in fact in Yorkshire) and the locals are not slow to take advantage of this!

The mighty river Trent divides the county from Lincolnshire as far as Newark and then crosses the county to bissect Nottingham itself before heading off through Derbyshire to its source in far off Staffordshire.

Because most of the land was under trees, there are relatively few Castles in Nottinghamshire and only two have anything much remaining of them; Nottingham and Newark.
