The furthest south of the Baltic States, Lithuania has always had strong ties with Poland both politically and culturally. These links are now re-establishing themselves after the break up of the Soviet Union.
The capital of Lithuania is Vilnius, renowned as one of Europe's best preserved medieval cities. Other fascinating sights in the country include the Hill of Crosses and the Kuronian Spit (which it shares with the Kaliningrad region of Russia).
