For the lilac tree
Growing all over
Verdant and free.

Colonising the wasteland
We humans create
Bomb sites and sidings
Behind derelict gates.

Brilliant - shining
Purple and white
Can there be
A more magnificent sight?

And the smell!
Nature’s gratis perfumery
So let’s hear a hooray
For the lilac tree.
